Should I get a MAC or PC?
Should I get an Android or iPhone?
I see these questions a LOT on Real Estate forums and I totally get why someone would ask, but things to consider when you read other people's responses:
Should I get a MAC or PC?
OK, so let's start with computers first and I also want to mention that I have been working in Information Technology since the mid 90's and also how devices (way back in the palm pilot days, yes, I am that old, ha ha) and how those devices integrate with computers, email, contacts and calendars and now with cloud storage like Dropbox, iCloud, One Drive and Google Drive.
In my experience of working with people, if you come from a PC background and switch to a MAC there is a learning curve. Of course, you can learn the differences, but some people find it extremely challenging. So I generally tell them to buy a PC. It is irrelevant what phone or tablet you have. If you LOVE MACs, then, of course, buy a MAC. What many people don't understand is that iPhones and iPads are NOT the same operating system as a MAC, so you aren't going to use it as such.
Here are just a few comments when someone asks this aged-old question: PC or MAC?
Should I get an Android or iPhone?
1. Any apps you paid for on one platform will have to be redownloaded and paid for again on the other.
2. If you use video chat on that particular device with family and friends, like Facetime, Android doesn't have the same app, so what will you use and will it be OK with your family and friends?
3. Are your contacts all sitting just on Apple iCloud (usually not an issue with Android) and if you switch, will ALL your contacts be gone?
4. If you are thinking about switching to an Android, I find most people don't consider what will happen with iMessage and Text messaging.
So let's say you have an iPhone and iPad and decide you want to move to use an Android as a phone.
Here is what could happen.
Apple uses something that is called iMessage and you probably don't even think twice about how it works but you should. 😮
If I am sending a message from my Apple device to a NON-Apple user, I send it as a GREEN Text message and if I am sending a message to another Apple user, I send it as a BLUE iMessage.
So, I buy my fancy new Android and send messages to my Apple friends. Do you think they receive it as a GREEN message or a BLUE message? GREEN.
My Apple friend wants to message me, just as they always have. Where does it go? It probably goes to your APPLE device unless they know to send it as a text message to your Android, which they won't! So you have to check your APPLE device iMessage AND your new Android text messages. Got it?
Apples iMessage works over a WIFI plan or uses a cellular data plan. Text messaging works because you have a texting plan with your cellular carrier. I hope I explained this well enough. If not, please comment below.
